Where do YOU look for meanings of names?

You know how some names have multiple meanings? What is up with that. Like i looked up Kaia on namemeanings.com it says it means spear, somwhere else it means calm waters, somewhere else it means like 10 different things, so you dont have to look up Kaia specifically but where do you go to look for name meanings?Where do YOU look for meanings of names?
Most of the baby name sites and books are based off of Anglicized meanings of names. other sites break the name down to their many variants, forms and origins, meanings are different from language to language.



i prefer using http://www.behindthename.com/ for meanings, variants, etymology (history) and spellings...esp for genders which everyone lately has (MHO of course) skewed the boundaries into insanity. behindthename.com is the most accurate site i've found out there.



I also have etymology books on names. Everything from American baby names to Jewish baby names, to African, Indian, Chinese, and Irish baby names. None of those yuppy mainstream books.

LOVE this site. it has the name, the variants, the Anglicized spellings and a bit of etymology (history) on each name.
I usually Google the name, and then pick the website that looks most legit. Kaia probably means things in more then one language, I have found that a lot with names. Kaia is beautful btw :-)

EDIT: I usually go to babynames.com, but they don't even have my favourite name there, "Magenta", I know it's a colour but it's a name too!

You can look in baby name books. Find them at your local bookstore (Books-a-Million, Barnes and Noble, maybe ever Wal-mart)

Websites tend to lack the credibility baby books have.



Kaia is actually Greek in origin and it means pure but names and meanings tend to vary from region to region.

I agree Marie means like three different things, depending on where you look, a lot of names seem to be that way.

There are multiple websites I visit when I refer to the meaning and origin of a name. For instance, I will rely on www.babynames.com, www.behindthename.com, and www.ancestry.com most frequently.

Interesting you should mention Kaia.. I've read it also means diamond in the sky :p (which I think is really beautiful, but who knows if it's real or not? lol)

I use Google and just enter "meaning of name ----"%26gt; Then you get your choice of sites and you go right to the name you are checking.
