Why do people care so much about name meanings?

I know they do matter, but some people choose names just based on meaning instead of the actual name. If your going to choose a name you should choose what you like, because the name matters more than the meaning. Like, if your meeting someone for the first time and they tell you your name, your not gonna think oh I wonder what the meaning is. And nobodys gonna go look up your name meaning when they first meet you, and most likely nobody will ever even know it. The meanings do matter, because you don't want your kid having a stupid meaning but, as long as the meaning isn't stupid it dosen't even matter. Why do people care so much?Why do people care so much about name meanings?
That might be your prospective on name meanings, but they matter to me on a deeper level instead of the shallow hindsight level you have put out there.



Maybe you should ask someone with the name Kennedy did their parents look up the meaning of their name! That's what happens when people think "the name matters more than the meaning".

well a lot of people think that if they name they're kids something that has a certain meaning, they're kids will fulfil that meaning. for instance my dad loved hunting so he named me "Chase" which means hunter. I realy dont enjoy hunting that much, i love guns but hunting isnt my thing.Why do people care so much about name meanings?
I don't think people should stress out over it, but there could be a family or historical meaning behind the meaning they're looking at. (ha that was confusing).
It's because the kid will be stuck with that name for LIFE. Honestly, parents who give their kids stupid or crazy or unusual names, no matter how wonderful the meaning may be, are just selfish and inconsiderate.



If you want to give something a crazy name, create a virtual character somewhere.
many ppl think that a child's name has a particular meaning, if the parents are superstitious then they will find a name that has meanings so that in the future their child will have a lot of good things when thwy grow up.
Because when your a little kid, everyone compares name meanings... Like I was gonna be named Bethany but it meant House of Poverty...



So your best friend comes up to you, "my name means beautiful, whats yours mean?"

"house for poor people"

BTW I love the name Bethany just an example...
In religious cases its because of it's background and because of their religion it's just something they feel the need or want to do.
I named my son based on meaning, Harley Thomas IV after my husband and his grandfather and his great grandfather...
