P.S. The very fact that you are working hard on your book suggests you are serious about writing. Once you have a polished manuscript begin submitting query letters to literary agents. Good agents can be found at the Association of Authors' Representatives website: http://www.aar-online.org

  • Stratocaster, Telecaster,... name meanings?

What are the name origins of Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster... guitars? What do they mean?Stratocaster, Telecaster,... name meanings?
Hello, Ivan! Not sure about how the man dreamed up the names, but Don Randall was the person responsible for both Stratocaster and Telecaster (see http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/2009-鈥?/a> for a recent article). I suppose you could imagine that Stratocaster was thought of as "casting" musical nirvana into the "stratosphere", and perhaps Telecaster came from a contraction of "television" and "broadcast" (the Broadcaster was the first name applied to the Telecaster instrument, having to be changed for legal reasons); just some random thoughts! There is a name that stands out to me, La Malinche. It's the name of an Indian (Native of Mexico) that helped Hern谩n Cortez to communicate with the Indians of the 16th century Mexico. She worked as a translator and was a traitor to her people, and her name signifies "not showing her true self" because she helped him to eventually conquer the Aztecs. Name meanings for a girl ?

Name of a book of double meanings?

the book i am referring to, i was told about many years ago, i am looking for the name, i was told the entire book was written with double meanings, every sentence apparently.

that's all i know, seeing as i can't find any reference to this or any type of book like it, i am presuming it would be memorable and one of you have read it.

anyone know what it is?Name of a book of double meanings?
Giles Goat-Boy, by John Barth; or

The Sot Weed Factor, by John Barth

Mostly Giles Goat-Boy. Unbelievable the layers of double and triple meanings in this book. Is it a send up of Oedipus Rex? A send-up of MacBeth? A send-up of the Passion Play? It's very richly textured and subtle.

The Sot-Weed Factor, in its own way, seems to be a send-up of Candide, by Voltaire. Another masterpiece.

    Name meanings question?

My name is Mathew...no not Matthew

I was just wondering if there was any history/marked differences in meaning between the 1 "T" and the 2 "T" approach haha. The question "why are you 'Mat' with 1 'T'?" has been haunting me for my whole life please give me anything to work with.Name meanings question?
Interesting question. Some parents just prefer different spellings... and it's the children who pay the price unfortunately!

You can look at it from a numerological perspective, at least. Having just one "t" in your first name affects what's called your Outer Personality expression number and your Path of Destiny number. There is a great book by Dusty Bunker called Numerology and the Divine Triangle. I'd suggest you get it, calculate your numbers and read up a bit on the different numerological expressions.

This is way that I am deciding on how to spell my daughter's name... with an "h" at the end or no "h". So far, we're leaning toward no "h" - the numbers are much more favorable.

Sounds hokey to some, but there is definitely something behind it. It might help you make sense of it a little more if it is truly something that has been bothering you your whole life.Name meanings question?
mathew means the same as matthew. it's just a different spelling.

    Who decides name meanings?

For example, how did the name David come to mean "beloved"?Who decides name meanings?
There is no group of people that assign meanings to names. However, some people study a names' etymology -- the study of human names and their meanings is called Anthroponomastics. To find out more about this check out the link provided in the source section.

Most names originate from words, and all words have meanings. Their meaning is not apparent to us because the names have been passed down through the centuries. In that time languages change and people use names that aren't of their ethnic background/language.

Back in the day many names described occupations, personal and physical characteristics. A David might have been named so because he really was beloved by his parents (David originates from the Hebrew word 'dvd', which means 'beloved'). I see it as the same thing as people naming their children things like Faith and Grace. We know the meaning of these names. But what if our language undergoes significant change over, say, the next six hundred years... people might still be using the name Faith, but have no idea what it means.
The other people are wrong. Names have their bases in the languages they originated from... scholars did not sit around and randomly assign meanings to sounds. Pleasant words in other languages became names for people; for example, "David" comes from Hebrew.

Last names come from family's professions or locations, most often; for example, someone whose last name is "Potter" had a relative somewhere back who was a sculpter or potter, hence the name.

If you are interested in where names and words come from, there is a study dedicated to it called etymology, or where words and names originate. It's very interesting!Who decides name meanings?
Mostly scholars, ones who had alot of time on their hands, and just decided one day, that people would like to know names %26amp; the meanings!I truly love the name David,Daniel., theologians(people who study the Bible, and the names.Who decides name meanings?
nobody decides them they're evolved from different languages - ancient greek, latin, hebrew, modern european languages etc..
i think that modern names are words from other languages, meaning "beloved" and other such nonsense! :)
becuase in whatever origin/ language david comes from.. david actually does mean beloved.

David is derived from a Hebrew word that means "beloved".
    Thats really interesting

xMy name sarah robey name meanings?
ROBEY: This very interesting surname is recorded in the registers of England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany. It is recorded under the spellings Roby, Robey, Rouby, Roubay, Ruby, Rubi, Rubee and Roeby, and it is very difficult to give a precise origin for any spelling. The surname has at least three primary sources, each with its own history and derivation. Firstly it may be of Old French origin, and a locational name from Roubaix in Nord, France. Initially the name was recorded as "de Roubaix" , an example being in 1411 the marriage of Marie De Roubaix to Antoine De Croy at Roubaix, in the district of Nord. The Irish surname is from this source, is probably Huguenot, and is first recorded in County Cork in 1702 when Catherine Rubie married Matthias Smith at Cork city. The second main source of the surname, is the pre -medieval 6th century Anglo-Saxon given name "Robert", which was the basis of many nickname spellings such as Rob, Robbie, Robbin, and Robbey. Finally, the name may be of 8th century Viking origin, and locational from a place called Robey in Derbyshire or Roby in Lancashire. These place names derive from the Old Norse "ra", meaning a boundary mark, with "by", a farm or settlement. Examples of the surname recording include James Roubay, who married Helen Blunt at St Vedast's church, Foster Lane, London, in 1599, Elizabeth Roby christened at Farnworth, Lancashire, in 1639, and John Robey, who married Mary Coles at St Dunstans in the East, Stepney, on October 23rd 1773. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Jean de Roubaix, which was dated 1389, in Birth Registers of Roubaix, Nord, France, during the reign of King Charles V1, of the House of Valois, 1380 - 1422. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

    Lithuanian last name meanings?

Many lithuanian last names include "evicius" or variations of the sorts.

If anyone could tell me/ offer assistance with this last name: "Yurkevicius," it would be greatly appreciatedLithuanian last name meanings?
For all practical purposes the formation of last names was finished in Lithuania by the end of the 18th century. From that time on everyone was relatively consistently named with a first and family name in official documents. In addition to names which have their origin in old folk names and nicknames some come from patronymics, i.e., a name derived from the father's name by means of a suffix, usually -aitis, but also -ūnas, -onis, -?nas, -ynas, etc. Thus the sons of Gintautas are called Gintautaitis, plural Gintautai?iai, the sons of Geidvilas are called Geidvilaitis, plural Geidvilai?iai, the sons of Antanas are called Antanaitis, plural Antanai?iai. For a long time these were true patronymics, i.e., Peter the son of Antanas would be called Petras Antanaitis, but Peter's son John would be called Jonas Petraitis. Gradually the name became fixed and did not change from generation to generation.

With the name Jonas 'John' we find such etymological patronymics as Joniūnas, Jononis, Jon?nas, Jonynas, etc. Since at the time of the formation of last names in Lithuania the official language of the government was the Slavic chancellory language (a variety of Belorussian or White Russian) and then later, Polish, frequently the last name was written with Slavic patronymic suffixes. For example, Jonas Petraitis was written as Jan Petrovi?. Therefore many Lithuanian family names have the Slavic patronymic ending -avi?ius, -evi?ius. Later when Polish became the official language the endings -owski, -inski and -icki were used which in the course of time were Lithuanianized into -auskas, -inskas and -ickas respectively, e.g., Petrauskas, ?ilinskas, Judickas, etc. In addition, both patronymics and family names were derived from the Slavic diminutives and terms of endearment, e.g., Jankaitis, Jankūnas, Jasaitis, Jasiūnas, Jasonis, Jas?nas, Jasiulis, Jaskutis, Jaskūnas, Ivonaitis, Iva?aitis, Iva?kaitis based on such Polish or Belorussian forms of the name 'John' as Janka, Ja?, Ja?ka, Ivan, Iva?, Iva?ka. Note also the forms with the Slavic suffixes such as Jankevi?ius, Jankauskas, Jasevi?ius, Jasinskas, Jaskevi?ius, Ivanauskas, Ivanavi?ius, Iva?auskas, Iva?kevi?ius, etc.
    Read more here: http://www.lituanus.org/1982_3/82_3_01.h…

Its a patronymic ending of Slavic origin meaning essentially 'son of'.Lithuanian last name meanings?
The "Yurk" part is the slavic equivalent of "George." You see it in other slavic surnames such as Yurkovitch, Yurchencko and Yurkiewicz. The "evicius" part basically means "son of." So the surname Yurkevicius is a patronymic, meaning "son of George."

Oh My Goodness -- Think 1st -- you are so funny and I voted for him twice (and respect the man). Who says Republicans don't have a sense of humor????
Do you mean like "lewinski" took on a different meaning from Bill Clinton's affair with her?

Maybe in the future when you see a homeless person they might say "I used to have a job and a home but I got "Obama'd".

    Or.

"I used to be an American, but we all got "Obama'd" right out of our country".

    A sadly very real possibility.
No. Thanks for the two points.

Bush just blew a trillion bucks on the banks...in one of the worst managed programs I've EVER SEEN. Did that create new meaning?

Bush = Idiot, Paulson = bag man

Who pushed for that bill? Who begged the legislature to pass it? BUSH and PAULSON.

Apparently, your MEMORY is flawed. How typical.
Funny thing is that "Bush" had its own meaning already. And he was a big one.

Where do YOU look for meanings of names?

You know how some names have multiple meanings? What is up with that. Like i looked up Kaia on namemeanings.com it says it means spear, somwhere else it means calm waters, somewhere else it means like 10 different things, so you dont have to look up Kaia specifically but where do you go to look for name meanings?Where do YOU look for meanings of names?
Most of the baby name sites and books are based off of Anglicized meanings of names. other sites break the name down to their many variants, forms and origins, meanings are different from language to language.

i prefer using http://www.behindthename.com/ for meanings, variants, etymology (history) and spellings...esp for genders which everyone lately has (MHO of course) skewed the boundaries into insanity. behindthename.com is the most accurate site i've found out there.

I also have etymology books on names. Everything from American baby names to Jewish baby names, to African, Indian, Chinese, and Irish baby names. None of those yuppy mainstream books.

for Irish names, and pronunciations i use

    http://www.babynamesofireland.com/

LOVE this site. it has the name, the variants, the Anglicized spellings and a bit of etymology (history) on each name.
I usually Google the name, and then pick the website that looks most legit. Kaia probably means things in more then one language, I have found that a lot with names. Kaia is beautful btw :-)

EDIT: I usually go to babynames.com, but they don't even have my favourite name there, "Magenta", I know it's a colour but it's a name too!

Hope I helped! :c]Where do YOU look for meanings of names?
You can look in baby name books. Find them at your local bookstore (Books-a-Million, Barnes and Noble, maybe ever Wal-mart)

Also there are plenty of sites on that subject.Where do YOU look for meanings of names?
Websites tend to lack the credibility baby books have.

Kaia is actually Greek in origin and it means pure but names and meanings tend to vary from region to region.

The one website I've found to be a pretty reputable site is babynamesworld.com
    www.babynamesworld.com

If Kaya is a form of Katherine, it means "pure" in Greek. If you spell it Kiah, then it is African for "season's beginning." But Kaya could mean lots of things. It could be short for Kaya'aton'my, which is Nez Perce Indian for "she who arranges rocks."

Brielle means "God is my might" in Hebrew.

    Bailey means "bailiff" in English.

Madison means "Maud's son" or "Matthew's son" in English.

Connor either means "wise aid" in Irish Gaelic, or "lover of hounds" in Gaelic.

    鈥搉oun

    1.

British Dialect. a farm, esp. a dairy farm.

    2.

    Archaic. a village; hamlet.

Some are more tricky. The word "ham," for instances, often comes from a bend in a river. Because the upper part of a pig's leg was the origin for ham, the upper part of human legs were sometimes called hams, and the bend of the knee came to be called the same thing, by association.

You might also look up a place in Wikipedia that includes the name. Often they have name origins. For example, Portsmouth was named from "mouth of the Portus harbor."Need help with place name meanings!!!!!?
Land - means land! Mouth - means mouth (of a river). Wall - means wall! Ham - hamlet (small village). Wold - is look-up-able in a dictionary, but I think it's rolling countryside like in the Lincolnshire Wolds. A could be anything - you'd have to quote the name of a place to give us a clue. Most of the others will be in a dictionary. But 'set' you might have to quote the rest of the word for us to work out.Need help with place name meanings!!!!!?

im very sorry to hear about your situation

i think the meaning of a name is important

are you sure you can handle twins, under such a stressful situation, and so young.

We're guys - we don't put much thought into names. It's just a name. :) Sorry about you getting raped.. maybe a little TMI?How do I get him to understandstand how important name meanings are to me?
Well obviously he must know your situation. And to be honest, he doesn't care what they mean because a lot of people don't. I care what they mean, so I chose one that didn't have a bad meaning. It's fine, just realize that you're going to have to be doing the name screening for some bad meanings. Anyway, I'd be totally ecstatic that he stayed with you, considering you're only 13 and the children aren't even his. I wouldn't be too picky or naggy about the fact that he doesn't care what they mean.

My name is Emilie it means rival, laborious, ambitious, flattering, hardworking, and eager..that is what i found on the web! I guess laborious and hardworking suit me because my teacher said i am an over-achiever today...lol

My middle name is Marie- that one means bitter...not so much me...hah :]Name meanings and you?
Sarah : "Princess" - I hope not :/ (The word "princess" brings about negative connotations for me, i.e. somebody spoiled, babied and pampered...) Sarah was known in the Bible for her audacity. When God told her that she was to bare a son, she had the boldness to laugh about it. The son she eventually bore was Isaac which (not so coincidentally) means "laughter." I like to think I'm bold. :)

Elizabeth : "God's Oath" or "God has promised" (The meaning is derived from her own story in the Bible - God promised Elizabeth a son. Her son was John (John also means "God's Gift" or "God has given".))Name meanings and you?
    My name is Rachel Marie

Rachel means Ewe in Hebrew, and I guess sheep are like gentle and sweet and stuff... Ha ha that's kinda me... Sometimes. The weird thing about my name, is, my brother's name is Jacob, and Rachel was the favorite wife of Jacob... Ha ha

Marie means bitter in Hebrew, which I guess can sometimes be me, too... Like sometimes I'm just not in a good mood.

Ha ha pretty much, I'm a Bitter Sheep. They cancel each other out.
Katey means pure, i am definately not pure haha. I dont think my name suits me at all, to me its a very girly cutesy name and i am the complete opposite. I think even the spelling 'Kady' would suit me alot better.

My middle name is Anne, i think it means something like favoured grace? Definately not graceful..i just realised how much my names contribute zero to who i am. hahah.
    my name is Kimberly Ann

Kimberly means Leader Of The Warriors. haha i guess i try to be a leader but not of any warriors. maybe of worriers haha.

and well you already know what Ann means. i'm not so gracious but i am merciful haha.

i want to name my daughter Audrey Valyn. [when i have one]

    Audrey means noble strength

and Valyn for my boyfriends mom. that was her name. she was born on Valentines day. i couldn't find a meaning for it.. but it means a lot to me. i never got the chance to meet her before she passed away.
My name is Leah and it means Glad Tidings in Greek, Weary in Hebrew, Mistress in Assyrian, and I think it means Gazelle in some other language. My parents named me the Greek one.

I think I fit Glad Tidings, I try to be an optimist. My middle name doesn't mean anything.
My name is Lisa Michelle. Lisa means God is my oath and Michelle means Who is like God. Pretty spiritual stuff considering i'm far from being religious.

My daughters name is Katherine Alexis. Katherine means Pure and Alexis means Defender of the People. I guess as of right now she's pure since she's only 5...but i don't know of her being defender at all!
    Rebecca Ann

"It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "to bind". Biblical: Rebekah, noted in the Genesis account as a maiden of beauty, modesty, and kindness, became the wife of Abraham's son, Isaac."
    Mine is Danica Noelle..

Danica means "morning star" which pretty well fits me because I am definitely a morning person and get up fairly early in the morning for no reason whatsoever and have always been that way!

Noelle means "Born on Christmas day" which I wasn't born on Christmas day, but I was born a week after on New Years Day!
    I'm Stephanie Louise.

    Stephanie means "crowned one"

    Louise means "battle maiden"

So I guess I'm a battling princess/queen. I'm not very prissy, but I am argumentative. I am definitely a fighter (had to be to survive my abusive childhood), so I can definitely see that.
My real name means Noble and my middle name means Joy. They fit I suppose.

The meaning of a name is very important to me..I will only name my child something if it means something great.

To the person above- John means "Yahweh is gracious."
Mine is Noelle, It means 'Born on Christmas day'...which suits me, Because I was born on Christmas day.

Middle name is Elisabeth It means the oath, fullness of God
    Kanani (pronouced ka-nuh-nee)

    middle name- Naomi Napua

    Kanani- the beautiful

Naomi- the most beautiful or delightful/pleasant

    Napua- the flower

these are hawaiian names. except naomi. I guess it fits me. I don't know.
Katherine Mary- Katherine Mary Pure and Mary means Bitter. Pure Bitter I guess that does suit me because I am pure and sometimes I can bitter always being honest with people and telling them the truth.
    My names natasha krithika

    natasha is christmas

    and krithika [indian name] star

so my name means christmas star i think its pretty =]
    Teresa Ann

I'm not sure the meanings. You just gave me the meaning of ann and yes I am Gracious and Meciful, almost to a fault somethimes.
    my name is Suzanne Kendra

    Suzanne- is french for lily

Kendra- the greatest champion and understanding knowledge
    pauline means little
    Casey - Irish: Means Brave

Nicole- French from of Nicholas which means victorious people.

I am NOT brave. at all.

How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?

For example...I love the name Mara and am seriously considering it for my unborn child, should he/she be a girl.

However...most any site you look up the name Mara...it has awful meanings! Bitter, bringer of death, demon...LOL...couldn't get much worse if you put lots of stock into name meanings!

It bothers me a little...but not a lot.

Was wondering if any of you love particular names, but hate the meaning associated with it and worry that it might get brought up over and over once you name your child that...?How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?
I'm not overly fussed by baby name meanings. And Mara is lovely, regardless of the downer associations in some baby name books.

In fact, I often hear parents say things like, "Her name is Caliana Jolie. It means beautiful princess." And I think that they're putting far too MUCH stock in what baby name books tell them about names' meanings.

I think it is far more important to consider how the name will be perceived out in the world, and unfortunately, very few baby name books will tell you that.

So I'll say that Mara is a fabulous choice that is feminine, but frills-free, simple but not common and distinctive without being strange.

    I'd use it without hesitation!
I'd go for it if you really like it and it isnt bothering you too much.

Most people don't know the meanings of names..I mean, if anything your daughter would look it up and probably laugh it off, especially in her teenage years. =)

BUT if it is concerning you that, consider making it her middle name? How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?
in all honesty i don't care what a name means. The only thing that matters to me is what it means to me. Take for example my unborn sons name it will be Xxavier, it has a very religious meaning yet when i hear and when i write al i think about is warriors. So for me it means warrior. How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?
I did rule out potential names due to their meanings - but really it's just a mental aversion and the meanings carry no significance.

If it bugs you alot, you can always choose a longer version of the name, such as Marabelle, Maralyn or Marabeth if one of those has a more favorable meaning (I don't know if it does), and then just call her "Mara."

For what it's worth, I think Mara sounds like a lovely name.
I think the real question is how MUCH it bothers you personally. To be honest, most other people could care less about what the name means. But if you do name your child that, you should have a good explanation when she gets older and asks.
well i don't bother about the meaning to much but a name like cain means posessed the origanal biblical murderer which is kinda off putting. My daughter is called Mia which means mine and she is so thats fine with me x
I really cared what my daughters name ment when I was looking for a name...But that is just me, I like the name Mara....if it doesn't bauther you then don't worry about it....congrats!!
Personally, I don't care about the meaning associated with names - I mean most people don't know the meaning, anyway. I could care less about the supposed meaning.

Why do people care so much about name meanings?

I know they do matter, but some people choose names just based on meaning instead of the actual name. If your going to choose a name you should choose what you like, because the name matters more than the meaning. Like, if your meeting someone for the first time and they tell you your name, your not gonna think oh I wonder what the meaning is. And nobodys gonna go look up your name meaning when they first meet you, and most likely nobody will ever even know it. The meanings do matter, because you don't want your kid having a stupid meaning but, as long as the meaning isn't stupid it dosen't even matter. Why do people care so much? Why do people care so much about name meanings?
That might be your prospective on name meanings, but they matter to me on a deeper level instead of the shallow hindsight level you have put out there.

Maybe you should ask someone with the name Kennedy did their parents look up the meaning of their name! That's what happens when people think "the name matters more than the meaning".
it may be that they want a name that is from their own heritage. Why do people care so much about name meanings?
well a lot of people think that if they name they're kids something that has a certain meaning, they're kids will fulfil that meaning. for instance my dad loved hunting so he named me "Chase" which means hunter. I realy dont enjoy hunting that much, i love guns but hunting isnt my thing. Why do people care so much about name meanings?
I don't think people should stress out over it, but there could be a family or historical meaning behind the meaning they're looking at. (ha that was confusing).
It's because the kid will be stuck with that name for LIFE. Honestly, parents who give their kids stupid or crazy or unusual names, no matter how wonderful the meaning may be, are just selfish and inconsiderate.

If you want to give something a crazy name, create a virtual character somewhere.
many ppl think that a child's name has a particular meaning, if the parents are superstitious then they will find a name that has meanings so that in the future their child will have a lot of good things when thwy grow up.
Because when your a little kid, everyone compares name meanings... Like I was gonna be named Bethany but it meant House of Poverty...

So your best friend comes up to you, "my name means beautiful, whats yours mean?"

    "house for poor people"

    You know?

BTW I love the name Bethany just an example...
In religious cases its because of it's background and because of their religion it's just something they feel the need or want to do.
I named my son based on meaning, Harley Thomas IV after my husband and his grandfather and his great grandfather...

Do you care about name meanings?

Ok so I have search high and low for the perfect baby girl name because I could not find one that really stuck out to me that I REALLY liked. Now I came across Lilah. I've had my heart set on it for quite some time and I am crazy about it. Well, my husband is all about name meanings so he asked what it meant and I didn't know so I looked it up today and this is what I found:

"languishing (lacking of vigor and spirit), lovelorn, seductive; night beauty".

I know my husband is going to be completely against it now. What do you think about it? Any one wanna help me find another name now? :-(Do you care about name meanings?
    Lilah/Lyla/Leila means "night"

I use behindthename.com for meanings their site is the most accurate. and yes meanings do make a bit of a difference to me, but not too hugely so.

If it really bothers you and your husband, consider:

Lillian which means Lily (the flower)

Lila: which means playful, amusement. (said Lill-uh)

    Lily: for the flower
I personally don't care that much about what a name means - a name doesn't define the person. Name meanings generally come from the root of the word that the name is derived from, which is definitely interesting, but for me not a deterrent to using a name that I love.

I personally like the full name of Delilah, with Lilah as a nickname. It has the same meaning though.Do you care about name meanings?
I know what you mean as far as pretty name with bad meaning, I pay attention to meaning because I think its important, but if it doesn't bother you than don't worry about. Besides names have multiple meanings. I've always heard my name meant "a binding" but I just heard it also means "captivating", my name is Rebecca. It could have special meaning to you. Like my favorite name is Leah, not because it means "weary" or from the Bible character, but because that's my sister's name.

Good Luck!Do you care about name meanings?
Just say it means night beauty and don't mention the other meanings. If you want another name that sounds like it, how about:

Lily - it's a flower name. A symbol of innocence and purity (Latin orogin)

Laila - it also means night beauty (Arabic origin)

Lilia - it means "What belongs to me belongs to God" (Hebrew origins)

Lala - means tulip (Slavic origin) Hawaiian equivalent is Lara
i think name meanings don't matter unless you for some odd reason decide to name your baby a word from another language that means something ridiculous. most kids don't know what their names mean anyways. Lilah is a nice name and I suggest you use it if you like it that much! Convince your husband that name meanings aren't that important...
that's a really pretty name and just because that's the "meaning" of it, it's not gonna govern who your daughter is.

Like for example, I'm into astrology but I don't believe it 100%, that's not going to tell me who I am.

As for the father.... Your carrying the baby so if he doesn't like it...tough!!! lol j/k... but try and talk some sence into him because it's ridiculous not to name your child something because of a "meaning" of a name that no one is going to know...
Lilah means different thing depending on the origin you choose.

    Lilah from Greek means Bluish

Lilah from Hebrew is a form of Delilah which means Itself (the flower)

    Arabic means Night

Hindi means Free will of God

    Persian means Lilac/Bluish

    Sanskrit means Lilac/Bluish,purple

I don't know what origin you found that meaning under but I hhaven'theard that one before
What does the meaning matter? It's an absolutely gorgeous name. Try a different website to find a better meaning, a lot of sites are different.

Best of luck! Lilah is adorable :) So is Leila, if it doesn't work out!
I am into meanings when it comes to names, although I am also into family names.
    My favorites :

    Alexa

    Shay

    Hailey

    Olivia

    Emily

    Victoria

    Kaitlyn

    Amy

    Carly

    Audrina

    Britney

    Brielle

    Charlotte

    Ella

    And many many more!
    Not at all.

For me, name meanings aren't really anything that anyone else cares about, besides you.

Edit. Liliah is one of my favorite names ?
maybe you could just make up a word that sounds good and then make up a meaning for it that sounds good.
Well I love the name Calista (kah lis tah)! It means she that is most beautiful. Hope you like it, bye!
I love the name Lilah too, however it is a derivative of Delilah, which means "one who weakens" (from the Biblical Samson %26amp; Delilah.) There is more than one meaning though, depending on the language. According to nymbler.com, it has many different origins and the meaning is "island." On behindthename.com, they don't have a listing for Lilah but there is one for Lila ("play, amusement") and Delilah ("delicate, weak, languishing") On babynames.com, Lilah and Lila both mean "Lilac tree" in Persian and Lila means "you are mine" in Hebrew. And nameberry.com lists Lilah as a variation of Leila ("dark beauty, night") and Lila ("lilac")

It all depends on what resource you use, so it really varies. I think it's a beautiful name, but if your husband won't agree, here are some suggestions:

    Lily

    Lillian/Liliana

    Emmaline

    Linnea

    Elise

    Lula/Luella
I personally weigh that on the situation. My son's name Kendall means the same thing everywhere I look, and it had/has a lot of sentimental value, so the meaning became one of the deciding factors for us when actually choosing it.

However, the opposite can be said for one of my long time favorites Cecelia (now Celia) which means "blind" because, though it had a negative meaning, it was also not a consistent one. I'd check one website and it'd say "blind" while on another it'd display "patron of music"

In the end meanings can never be 100 percent accurate, especially if the name you chose comes from several cultural backgrounds, in which it means different things, so I wouldn't let them sway me from using a name I love the sound and feel of.

    Best wishes..

Where can I find baby name meanings?

I'm planning a baby shower for one of my friends and we'll be playing a few games, one of the games is a matching game where you match a baby name to it's meaning. Can someone please tell me where to find baby name meanings? I know there are a few sites b/c I've been on some before but I lost them. I'd really appreciate any help.

Also, we're playing another game called "it's also a baby name" and it's this game where they give you clues like for example "it's the 4th letter in the alphabet" and the answer is D, well Dee can be a name. So it's a game like that, if there is any place where I can print out that worksheet for free OR if there is a website where there are baby names that are like everyday objects, so I can use it to make my own worksheet, that would be great too.

Thanks in advance! :DWhere can I find baby name meanings?

Why are name meanings not a big part of American culture?

It seems in the U.S. not many people know the meanings of their names when they are kids or even when they grow up. I guess it's not a big part of the culture here, but I bet it might be in other parts of the planet. I think in America maybe mostly children's names only have importance for the parents who fill out the birth certificate but don't mean anything to the child itself or that child's friends when he or she is growing up and attending school. I think in the U.S. mostly what is treasured is a person's habitual behavior or character rather than his or her name and what it means. Why are name meanings not a big part of American culture?
It seems that 90% of the time the kids with names that have some sort of significant meaning to them never come close to living up their names. So it's sort of a presumptuous practice in my opinion.

Don't you feel that some name meanings are unfair?

It's sad to see that many, many beautiful names have been ruined by their meaning. I hate to see that happen. Do any of you feel this way? Do you have names that were once gorgeous, but had an appalling meaning? Here are some that I know of:

1.Names such as Maria, Marie, Molly, and Mia.

~ Meaning: Sea of Bitterness. (and/or simply "bitter")

    2. Leah.

    ~ Meaning: Weary.

    3. Kennedy (includes all spelling variations).

    ~ Meaning: Ugly head.

I'm sorry, but that last one is plain unfortunate. Kennedy is a marvelous name, but for the meaning to be "Ugly head"??? When the name Kenna means "Beautiful"??? It just doesn't make sense. Also, my middle name is Maria, and my niece's name is Mia. And I love the name Molly/Mollie. But to mean "Sea of Bitterness"? It's cruel for that to be the meaning. Can't it just mean "Lovely"? That would sure be a lot nicer. And my sister's name is Leah, but she is in no way weary. I know it was after the woman in the Bible, but Leah is a lovely name, with a horrid meaning!

What I want to know is: Do any of you feel the same way? Are there other names with unfortunate meanings that you know of? What is everyone's opinion on this? Thanks in advance xx

PS And I don't mean to offend anyone with these names, I absolutely love them, but I hate how they have to have these meanings.Don't you feel that some name meanings are unfair?
I agree with you that it isn't nice to have a name that means bitterness, but names can be more than just their meanings. Celia, a name that I really love, means blind. Still, the aesthetics of the name and the family importance means more to me than the meaning; I would use Celia in a heartbeat.
What's unfair about it? People chose those words to be names, not the other way around.Don't you feel that some name meanings are unfair?
I feel the same way!!!!Don't you feel that some name meanings are unfair?
another horrible one... Claudia.... it means "lame". pretty name, horrible meaning.
    Meanings don't really matter.

I'm sure the Virgin Mary was anything but bitter.
lol! I know exactly what you mean, my child's name is Cameron and I found out it means "crooked nose"! I don't regret choosing that name, but that meaning makes me hope he doesn't hate me later!
I feel the EXACT same way!! I LOVE the name Leah but I would think twice about it because of the meaning. I was going to give Leah and Mary as examples.

That is what I am actually doing right now, looking up names and their meanings.
Honestly, who cares. Unless you are greek or latin why do you care what the name means?
yes, i agree. Marie is my daughter's middle name and it is beautiful - i can't believe it means bitter. Mallory and Maleah are pretty names with not so nice meanings. Leah is one of my favorite names - it is so pretty and gentle.

Very few people have any idea of the derivation of names or their meanings in their original languages. It's fun to know the meaning of one's own name, but if it's nasty or unfortunate, you can keep that to yourself.
Yes, I have the feelings as you do. And what is more, I do not watch the local TV in my country. They are too rash, down, false. I think names are only identify one person but also signify one" s nature.
their parents must not know that- but it is aweful!
LOL yeah that sucks especially for Kennedy. I wouldnt worry to much about it tho, most people dont know meanings of names except their own really, or unless they look it up. I didnt know that for Kennedy or Maria and I still think its a cool name. But sometimes if you look them up in certain places they mean different things...then theres really ugly names like mine LOL Greta, but it means pearl....etc. My fav name for a boy, Brody, means ditch but i dont care cause i like it!

What name meanings do you like most?

I love looking up names and when I have baby (not until a long time from now. im gonna be an old mom lol) i want them to have a name with a good meaning or what i think is good meaning. i kind of want to get to know the kid before naming it and the meaning to fit them as a baby even if the meaning is something that seems strange like relating to mythological figures. anyway.

what name meanings do you like in a name? it can be anything from "like the sun" to "bringer of sadness" lol your choiceWhat name meanings do you like most?
    Well,

My name, Rebecca, means captivating which I think is neat.

The names Isaac and Jacob have special meaning to me because in the Bible, those are the people Rebecca loves most so I think it would be special if my son's middle names were Isaac %26amp; Jacob. But Isaac's universal meaning is "laughter" which is adorable! And Jacob means "he who supplants".

Leah also has personal meaning to me because it's my sister's name so I want to name my daughter that. I might call her Ellie as a nickname to distinguish my sister and my future daughter. But that means "weary".

I like the meaning of Lee which is a family name but it means "sheltering from the storm"

The meaning of my friend's brothers name is "little deer" which id cute. His name is Offer (very common Israeli name).

Anyway, I like those names for their meanings to me and their universal meanings.
    Hallie- thinking of the sea

What is the name for word's that are spelled the same and sound the same but have different meanings?

I'm working on something and I need words that are spelled the same and sound the same but have different meanings. What are these things called? What is the name for word's that are spelled the same and sound the same but have different meanings?
They are called homographs. homonyms sound the same like BLEW and BLUE, but homographs LOOK the same as well as sounding the same. I'm sorry I cannot think of any examples at the moment.
The Best Answer is wrong! Words that are homographs look the same but are *pronounced differently* For instance:

    Wind (short i) can mean the movement of air;

Wind (long i) can mean turning the handle of a jack-in-the box

    Looks alike but sounds different.

Like someone stated it's a combination of Kay and the suffix -lyn. Kay on the other hand is a nickname for Katherine, which is derived from the Greek original Aikaterine. The etymology is debated and there are several alternative theories (and thus meanings). I suggest you check the link for more details.

The site (behindthename.com) is the one I'd recommend for anyone interested in detailed and accurate information. Since it's not a baby name site per se it doesn't oversimplify the meanings or pick the ones that sound the best to parents. Recommended.Name meanings?

Mireille was created by the French poet Fr茅d茅ric Mistral, as the title of one of his verse romance. He later named his daughter this, the first ever to be baptized Mireille, in 1861. When the priest inquired about the name, Mistral claimed that it was a Proven莽al form of Marie, from the Latin verb "mirare" (to admire). This explanation is false as Marie is not related to 'mirare', yet Mireille could indeed be an elaborated form of it.
