Names of birds are often just descriptive - like red-headed woodpecker or painted bunting. Sometimes they're named after a scientist (Nuttall's woodpecker is an example of that) or, in the case of Anna's hummingbird, after a duchess. It's kind of fun to look at their scientific names too and figure out what they mean. Haliaeetus leucocephalus (bald eagle) means white-headed fish eagle, which is a very good description of a bald eagle. Some of them are even wrong! The white-winged dove was famously misnamed by the very guy who made up the scientific naming system in the first place. He named it Zenaida asiatica, thinking it came from Asia, when it's really a North American bird. I don't know if a simple list of these meanings exists. I know this stuff because I have a whole bookshelf full of books about birds and have studied the names because I find it interesting. I hope you enjoyed. Are there special meanings behind bird names? if so where can i find a list of them?
